Block Board vs. Plywood | Amulya Mica Blogs

It depends on the project to chose between block board or plywood. Block boards are a decent choice if you want a smooth finished surface and the thickness of the panel is not a big factor. But plywood is a safer option if strength is more important. For eg, plywood may be used to lay down a tile and engineered hardwood subfloor, whereas block board is improper and will crush under footage.

Blockboard

A sheet of wood with a plywood frame and thin veneer panels on the top and bottom sides is a block board. The plywood core is composed of solid wood strips, and usually varies in depth from around 3/8-inch to 13/16-inches for a completed block board panel. Just since the wood strips are bonded with internal glues and the layers are hot-pressed to create a sturdy sheet is the block board designed for interior use.As a consequence, if block boards are used outdoors, the layers will delaminate and become unglued with time. For pieces of furniture such as desks and tabletops, block board is also used.

Plywood

One of the most durable wood products available is plywood. It consists of thin wood sheets which, under strain, are glued together. For internal purposes such as flooring and furniture making, and for outdoor purposes such as sheating a roof, plywood is used. Based on the appearance of the front and back doors, Plywood is rated from A to D with two letters.A panel with a 'AC' grade, for example, has a flat front side and slight knots on the front, reflecting the A-grade, while the C-grade means that there are noticeable knots and imperfections on the back side.

Similarities

Plywood and block board are both available in panels and conveniently accessible in shops for wood and home renovation. For interior designs, such as chairs and cabinets, you should choose either one. They are not pliable materials, though, and should not be used for applications that, for example, need a bent edge or one that involves routing to produce grooves. For a flat surface such as a cabinet door or table surface, plywood and block board are ideal for use only. If you would like a wood-finish look for your build, you can also prime and paint them or apply a veneer laminate to the surface. With typical instruments, such as a circle saw or jig saw, all are easy to see and cut. Adhesives, like contact cement and liquid nail materials, are still well used.

Differences

Although a block board panel does not reflect grain, a plywood panel reveals the grain characteristics of the wood. Therefore, if you use block board and want it to show a grain, you need to add a veneer laminate layer to one or both sides of the frame. There is a smooth finish on the block frame, meaning you don't have to sand it.You ought to use plywood with an A-grade on the side of the panel that will be seen if you wish to prevent sanding. There is no graded Block Board.
